Safety at stake on Adairs Road

Media Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Thieves have again targeted Council’s road safety structures, this time removing sight-rails from along Adairs Road in Hokitika.

“We conservatively estimate that replacing these will cost ratepayers between $2000 and $2500,” says Transportation Manager, Karl Jackson. “There really is no excuse for people to take sight-rails. They are an important safety feature on our roads and removing them could cause a serious injury or even death to a driver. Given the way that these rails have been removed, someone spent quite a bit of time gathering some now quite short planks of wood.”

Members of the community are encouraged to let Council know if they have any information about the whereabouts of the sight rails. The matter is also being referred to the police.
